Most of our patients are between 18 and 60. To be a candidate, you should be at least 40 pounds overweight. The National Institutes of Health, the Shape Up America Foundation, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommend the surgery for people with a Body Mass Index over 35, and that some may be a candidate above 30. You can determine your BMI using our calculator on the right.
The surgery is not cosmetic. If you decide to have surgery, you must understand that additional changes will need to be made to your eating and life habits. Gastric Band Institute makes sure that before you decide to have the procedure you know what to expect afterwards. We address this at our seminars.
Our seminars are held conveniently on a regular basis. Check the link on this website for the upcoming schedule. Once you have attended a seminar and decide you wish to take the next step, we will schedule a first visit with you as soon as possible.
After surgery, we will encourage you to attend our support groups. Most of our patients attend them monthly, although we conduct them weekly. Many of our patients credit the support groups for keeping them focused on why they had the surgery in the first place. We also make an email support list available.
